Technical Note: Space–time statistical quality control of extreme precipitation observations

Abstract. Information about precipitation extremes is of vital importance for many hydrological planning and design purposes. However, due to various sources error, some the observed may be inaccurate or false. The purpose this investigation present quality control using space–time statistical methods. To cope with highly skewed rainfall distribution, a Box–Cox transformation suitable parameter was used. value at location potential outlier estimated surrounding stations calculated spatial variogram compared suspicious observation. If difference exceeds threshold test, flagged as possible outlier. same procedure repeated different temporal aggregations in order avoid singularities caused by convection. Detected outliers are subsequently corresponding radar discharge observations, finally, implausible removed. demonstrated observations sub-daily daily resolution Germany.
